The Reckoning

There were two things Dominic Jolliet promised himself when he left

Paris for New France. The first was respectability and the second

was revenge. Respectability he'd attained long ago. And now, at last,

revenge was finally within reach, staring up at him through

Alexandra Winthrop's wide, golden eyes. He searched her face assessing

the changes of the past two years. Her red-brown hair, once

lightly powdered and piled on top of her head, was pulled back into

a single braid revealing the pure, uncluttered line of chin

and cheekbones. She was thin and dirty, her skin burned darker than

he'd ever seen on a white woman. Dominic swallowed, his glance

sweeping the coppery curls of the child in her arms. His throat

closed. He took a deep rasping breath. With a helpless sense

of inevitability, he realized it was all for nothing. His years

in the Canadian wilderness hadn't cured him of his obsession.
